George Cooke

Chair, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS)

George Cooke is currently the Chair of OMERS and the Past President and Chief Executive Officer of The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company (appointed in 1992). He is Chair of the Ontario Committee of the Insurance Bureau of Canada. He had served as a director of the Insurance Bureau of Canada from 1992 - 2007 (Chair of the Board 2000-2002). Mr. Cooke holds a directorship on several boards including E-L Financial Corporation Limited, Facility Association and Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation.

Mr. Cooke served as Special Advisor, Policy, to The Honorable Robert F. Nixon, Ontario Deputy Premier and Treasurer from 1989 to 1990, and as Vice President of the Ontario Division of S.A. Murray Consulting Inc. (a government relations consulting firm), from 1990 to 1992. Prior to 1990, Mr. Cooke held positions at Price Waterhouse, Ontario Hydro (Corporate Comptroller's Division), Ontario Energy Board and the Automobile Insurance Board.

An active contributor to Ontario's business and social health, Mr. Cooke's community leadership and business achievements have received special recognition from The Canadian Red Cross Society, the Insurance Institute of Canada and Assumption University, Windsor, Ontario. Reflecting his interest in the neurotrauma field, Mr. Cooke is a member of the National Honorary Board of Directors of The Canadian Paraplegic Association, an Honorary Director of the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and a former director of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.

Mr. Cooke received a Bachelor of Arts degree (Hons.) in Political Studies in 1975 and a Masters of Business Administration degree in 1977 from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. An avid golfer and curler, he lives in Toronto with his wife Erica and their two children.
