CIHI findings identify fall-related incidents as the leading cause for injury among older adults

August 1, 2019

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has published as set of infographics shedding light on the magnitude of injury-related hospitalizations in older adults across Canada. The findings reveal that falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations, with a staggering 81% of injuries resulting from a fall.

Our Fall Prevention program has placed special focus on falls in older adults to address this growing problem. A position paper developed by the Ontario Fall Prevention Collaborative with support from ONF urges Ontario health care providers and stakeholders to take action by collectively developing an integrated system-based approach to reduce the number and severity of fall-related injuries among older adults. The Collaborative members hope the document will be used to guide Ontario Health Teams and other key stakeholder groups to create an integrated system that improves the quality of life for older adults at risk of falls and lowers the financial impact falls have on Ontario health care.
