Project Lead: Elke McLellan, OT

Project Purpose: The targeted outcome of the project was to implement evidence-informed self-management group educations for adults with prolonged symptoms beyond the post-acute stage of recovery (4-12 weeks or more).

About the project

The purpose of the project was to develop, implement and evaluate a self-management education group for adults with concussion and their family members. The project aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a single education session on participants’ self-perceived knowledge acquisition and self-efficacy.

A self-management education program was used to teach and empower patients through group learning and shared lived experiences. Brief Action Planning, developed by the Centre for Collaboration, Motivation and Innovation was integrated throughout the session to help patients create action plans for their recovery.

All individuals who attended the group session reported retroactive increases in knowledge in 5 out of 7 content areas and found the single, 2-hour session to be an acceptable method of delivering evidence-informed education. Patients who attended indicated greater confidence in their capacity to follow through with their action plans. Nearly all patients completed an action plan and of those who did, 88% followed through with their plan and met, or partially met, their goal. Findings suggest that patients had transferred learned skills and strategies into actionable steps towards goal achievement.
